Fête Accompli - Salute to a Baldwin

On Monday night, the city’s cultural gentry gathered at Cipriani’s, on 42nd Street, for a black-tie gala put on by the Museum of the Moving Image to salute Alec Baldwin. “Alec Baldwin — whose real name is Chaim Levine,” said Michael Keaton, making the evening’s first bad Charlie Sheen joke. Keaton introduced a clip from “Beetlejuice.” Baldwin later placed the clip in context: “We were doing a lot of blow back in the ’80s.”

Cocktails began at 7 p.m., while the celebrities — Lorne Michaels, Richard Gere, Edie Falco, Tim Curry — filed in past a bevy of photographers shouting commands to look their way. Some of the less discreet guests gawked at the stand-and-repeat scene. “I gotta say, she looks great,” one man blurted into his cellphone about Mariska Hargitay. “And she had a kid recently.”

Quietly, I explained that the city was in the midst of a decade-long cocktail craze and that young people are indeed drinking gin again. Asked if he was there reporting a Talk of the Town piece on Baldwin — Talese has contributed to The New Yorker recently — the writer said he wouldn’t be opposed to doing an article on Baldwin but he wasn’t exactly on the job. “I don’t know what the hell I’m doing here.”

Keaton’s speech was followed by tributes from Tina Fey, Jimmy Fallon and Ben Stiller, who shared a urinal with Baldwin in “Along Came Polly.” “Peeing next to you was one of the highlights of my career,” Stiller said.

Baldwin, 52, is the 26th recipient of what the museum calls the Salute, a big glass tureen that has also been awarded to Clint Eastwood scarpe nike, Robert DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman, Tom Hanks, Sidney Poitier and Jimmy Stewart. Of course, the museum had its own reasons to celebrate Monday night: the recent completion of a $67 million renovation of its campus in Astoria, Queens, and a sendoff for its longtime director, Rochelle Slovin, who’s retiring.

Tina Fey, who is Baldwin’s co-star on “30 Rock,” gave what everyone seemed to agree was the best speech. (New York magazine posted the entire thing). “I know that, over the last five years, our writers have asked Jack Donaghy to do everything from imitate every member of Tracy Jordan’s family, to play his own Mexican doppelgänger scarpe nike, to, you know scarpe nike, act out a heartfelt goodbye scene with a live peacock trying to sodomize a Dick Cheney look-alike,” she said. “Jack Donaghy is a special character to me, and I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that not since Archie Bunker has there been a television character that my parents agree with so often.”

By the bar, someone bumped into me, spilling my second or third martini. “He’s so numb he doesn’t know the difference,” observed a gentleman in a beautifully tailored tuxedo. This turned out to be the legendary journalist Gay Talese, himself drinking a martini and in a playful mood. “What is that, gin?” he asked. “No one drinks gin anymore. Did you learn that from your father?”
